Game launches new Foodco store in a store concept

Foodco's got game
This week marked the official launch of Game’s new ‘store-in-a-store’ concept with the opening of Foodco, at their N1 City outlet. After 4 decades of delivering “quality general merchandise and non-perishable groceries for home, business and leisure,” Game has earned a reputation as a quality discount retailer, and Foodco is no exception.

The vision is simple and straightforward, Foodco is a mean, lean one stop grocery brand. No frills, no fuss. After conducting extensive research, across the country, with numerous candidates, the brains behind the new brand came up with their new strategy and it can be summed up in four words, which is also the brand’s philosophy: fresh; fast; easy; value. And that’s exactly what you get. New stock will be delivered daily and Foodco’s private label, which goes by the same name, provides a host of alternative options to your favorite purchases at unbeatable prices.

Now, before anyone starts being cynical and pointing fingers and Walmart, stop. This project was in the pipeline before any foreign investment talks were even a whisper. So, hats off to Tyrone Vieira and Richard Millson who were in large part responsible for driving and launching the new brand. This is big step to take, and it goes without saying that the risk is also sizeable, but sticking to Game’s value driven guarantees, it’s hard to see how this could fail.

In addition to the new grocery brand, Game are also introducing Liquormart, stand-alone stores which will be found outside various Game and Foodco stores. Liquormart will offer an extensive range of alcoholic beverages at discount prices.

The launch only took place a few days ago, but the store has already been open for just over a week and to call it a roaring success would be somewhat of an understatement. A colleague of mine whose mother lives in the area, reported that she had been to the new store intending to do her grocery shopping only to find hordes of shoppers already swarming the new discount outlet!

Shrinkage management and stock theft

Since the onset of the global recession shrinkage has been on the rise. That’s not to say that it’s a new problem but that it’s a persistent one which has yet to be put a satisfactory end. However, as most companies are still struggling with recovery, it is difficult for them to assign a significant part of their annual budget to security and loss prevention. What is also worrying are the results of a recent survey, conducted by the Centre of Retail Research (CRR), which showed that the major reasons for the increase in retail shrinkage was shoplifting followed closely by employee theft.

So when money is short and good people are hard to come by what remains? The machines. Recent research conducted by online giant IBM showed that mobile devices have become critical retail platforms and that emerging technology, including smart applications accessed via television, could be closer than expected. And, on the ground things are also changing.

By incorporating new technologies with their existing systems, retailers could effectively kill two birds with one stone. The introduction of automated systems would dissolve the need for extra staff and at the same provide a secure alternative for storage and dispensing.

Take Vinallti, a local retail solution provider, who have just launched their new iBlue Vault. Their automated stock replenishment system, described as “sophisticated and sexy”, automates a large retail category and provides one touch dispensing whilst also eliminating pilferage and stock handling. Although the system is currently exclusive to the tobacco industry, Vinallti hope to expand into other similar category products.

In a time where cutting down on expenses, and eliminating shrinkage is central to every company’s business strategy, the solution may lie in embracing the digital and automated sectors.

The Only Fish In The Sea

The global consumer’s spending power may have weakened but, if media reports are to be believed, his interest in ‘green’ practice and collaboration stands robust. For a steadily growing number of consumers around the world, one item on the shopping list dictates the choice of all the others: a healthier planet.

Recent media and consumer campaigns warn that after climate change overfishing is the most serious environmental concern facing us today. Sustainable seafood is seafood from either fished or farmed sources that can maintain or increase production in the future without jeopardizing the ecosystems from which it was retrieved. And its achievement represents a real concern for fisheries, supply lines, retailers, and consumers.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is one of several international non-profit groups that address seafood sustainability. The organisation has a certification programme for consumer seafood products, and lists certified products on its website. Against the backdrop of a markedly strengthening sustainable seafood movement in South Africa, the MCS’s eco-label is expanding its reach in the local market. The eco-label, underwritten by a thorough, independent and science-based assessment process, takes the guesswork out of sustainable buying.

As the central manufacturer-consumer go-between, the retailer holds a unique ability to push the adoption of environmental ethics full circle. Woolworths is doing just that. The retailer recently became the first South African retail chain to offer MSC products from a variety of fisheries. An extension of the Woolworths Sustainable Seafood Policy, the move demonstrates the retailer’s commitment and practical contribution to the preservation of marine biodiversity, and represents another milestone in the steady enactment of its highly publicised Good business journey. The MSC eco-labels’ physical extension of the policy to the point-of-purchase is expected to increase consumer awareness and prompt responsible purchase decisions.
