An upbeat affair

Based on what was said at the Pick 'n Pay interim results presentation this morning, there are some exciting developments that will come to fruition in the second half of the year. These include the franchising rollout at Franklins, opening of two 2nd generation Hypermarkets in November (I look forward to seeing those), SAP implementation at a rate of almost 3 stores per week, and the integration of Fruit & Veg City into the group (providing the deal is approved by the competition commission). In addition to this there is a great deal of activity at the bottom end of the market with Boxer and Score set to open 10 new stores and Score aiming to convert a further 28 stores to the Nambawane format.

Wage negotiations have been constant for two years at an average increase of 8.5% in year one and slightly less in year two. It seems the unions are also committed to improving customer interaction and service levels, which most will agree need some improving.

The retail environment is bound to become tougher with interest rates and inflation rising to dampen consumer spending, but Pick 'n Pay is a well organised cash business that can perform very well in a high inflation environment, hence the upbeat excitement. One thing is for sure though - Sean Summers has an unbelievable amount to do in the next six months before he puts on his slippers and lights up a Cigar.

Pick 'n Pay earnings up 15.5%
Pick 'n Pay has announced a solid set of results for the six months to 31 August 2006. Turnover grew 10.3% to R18.6-billion, while trading profit increased 23.1% to R456.2-million. Headline earnings at R291.6-million were up 14.1% and headline earnings per share up 15.5% to 63.86 cents. The interim dividend increased 15.9% to 27 cents for Pick 'n Pay Stores Limited and by 15.9% to 13.17 cents for Pick 'n Pay Holdings Limited. Looking ahead, Summers said the Group was confident it would be able to achieve real growth in headline earnings per share for the year.

Shoprite to open two new supermarkets in Angola
Shoprite aims to open two new supermarkets in Angola this year to take advantage of the commodities boom in that country. Shoprite said a second Shoprite supermarket would be added to Luanda and a new store would open in the southern city of Lobito. At present, apart from one Shoprite, the company has seven smaller Usave formats in the capital.

Cashbuild profits up
Cashbuild on Tuesday said its revenue was up by 21 percent in the first quarter of its 2007 financial year compared with the same quarter last year. New stores opened since 1 July 2005 contributed 12 percent of the increase, whilst existing stores increased by 9 percent.

Retailers and banks rally after a moderate interest rate hike
Retailers and banks rallied on Friday in relief that the Reserve Bank hiked interest rates by only 0.5 percentage points, but a stronger rand hurt firms with overseas interests. Investors had worried that the central bank would hike rates by a full percentage point on Thursday, but they jumped in when the bank took a more moderate approach.

Farm workers to become farm owners
After generations of tilling vineyards, wine farm workers on three farms in the Franschhoek area will get ownership of one of the farms through an innovative empowerment deal. The properties include the adjoining Solms-Delta, Lübeck and newly-acquired Deltameer, which form a 76 hectare estate home to more than 200 people in 22 worker families.

Wal-Mart must pay $79m for missed breaks
Jurors in Philadelphia have awarded Wal-Mart workers $78.5 million (R590 million) for missed rest breaks and hours worked beyond regular shifts. The verdict is Wal-Mart's second multimillion-dollar loss in 10 months in employee group lawsuits over wages.
