Sunday Lunch

Sunday lunch
Before lunch on Sunday, I realised that I needed a good Shiraz to go with the roast lamb my wife had prepared. So I nipped down to the Pick ‘n Pay to get a bottle, not thinking twice. Once in the store I realised that it was Sunday, so I had to go to the Spar (not a Tops bottle store) on the other side of the center. They didn’t have the wine that I wanted (the great value Porcupine Ridge Shiraz – A personal favourite) so I ended up paying an exorbitant price for a suitable equivalent.

This paragraph outlines the bizarre state of South African Liquor retailing. Firstly, why should an independent retailer (the spar owner) be able to sell wine when the law abiding (Pick ‘n Pay) retailer can’t? If the government is going to decide who gets to sell wine when, then surely they have to be accountable for its policing too.
And secondly, why can’t food retailers sell beer?

I believe corporate retailers should become more aggressive in their quest for a larger slice of this R26 billion category. That means fighting legislation that prohibits them from selling beer and spirits, and alcohol on Sundays.
