April Retail Sales upSouth Africa's retail sales - the main measure of consumer demand - rose by 9.7% in the year to April at constant prices, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday.
In the three months to April, retail sales rose by 10.3% compared with the same period 12 months ago, also at constant prices.

Nampak sells plastic bags operation
South African packaging company Nampak (NPK) has sold its retail plastic bag business, Flexpak Cape Town, to Transpaco (TPC). Nampak said the transaction was part of an ongoing review of the strategic fit of businesses in its portfolio.

SABMiller buy two more drinks brands
SABMiller plc have announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the Sparks and Steel Reserve brands and related trademarks from US contract brewing partner McKenzie River Corporation for a cash consideration of US$215m. This acquisition gives Miller a sound entry into the growing caffeinated alcoholic beverage market.

AB Foods to close 2 plants
Associated British Foods PLC said on Tuesday it plans to close two of its six UK sugar beet factories, but added that it still intends to purchase the additional sugar quota available in the UK following reform of the European Union sugar regime.
