Urban Consumer spending

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Bottom of the Pyramid and the importance of catering to that sector specifically. Whilst it is true that South Africa’s Bottom of the Pyramid is very large, there is another sector that is growing at an increasing rate and cannot be overlooked, urbanites. An article I recently read dubbed them; Citysumers.

The article defines them as: “The hundreds of millions of experienced and sophisticated urbanites, from San Francisco to Shanghai to São Paulo, who are ever more demanding and more open-minded, but also more proud, more connected, more spontaneous and more try-out-prone, eagerly snapping up a whole host of new urban goods, services, experiences, campaigns and conversations.”

These citysumers present a host of new challenges for retailers. Their loyalty does not lie with a particular brand, but rather they look for brands that “challenge, thrill, titillate, or even shock.” In addition, each city has its own unique citysumers, meaning that a campaign that has swept Cape Town might crash and burn in Johnannesburg or Bloemfontein. City specific marketing is essential. They’re eager for new experiences and not shy to spend a little bit extra to find them.

A recent UNICEF report showed that in 2008 61% of the South African population was urbanized and growing at a rate of 2.1% annually. This is a massive portion of the population, many of whom have considerable disposable income, but not somewhere to spend it.

Innovation In FMCG

Innovation is key to survival in any industry. It is what keeps a product in the market, what keeps some competitors on their toes and others on top, essentially it is what drives a business forward.

Recently, I was among a number of privileged guests to attend the latest of TNS Research Survey's Breakfast series presentations where speaker Ray Crook, TNS Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa Director for Innovation and New Product Development, addressed the issue.

Out of the blocks Ray hit us with some numbers: $190 billion is spent on the technology sector and $19 billion spent in the consumer sector; 90% of executives have come to the realization that innovation is crucial to building inertia; and over 90% of consumers have unmet needs. Apart from being an eye-opener this also revealed converging points in the market, most notably that executives and consumers have a large overlapping interest which could be mutually beneficial.

However whenever engaged in innovation there are certain risks, least of which is product failure. There is also a large personal risk for the creative team, if an innovation fails this could potentially be career limiting. Thankfully, Crook offered some advice to avoid this. Top of list, an obvious but often overlooked step: do your homework. Find out what the needs of the consumers are, look for future gaps, what are the must have elements for the innovation. Furthermore, he advises a move away from the mass approach strategy to a more focused and targeted approach, when it comes to retail, everyone is not equal; consumers have different wants and needs, different levels of income, different priorities.

Once a consistent need has been determined, a focused approach must be taken and detailed briefs, for strategy and continuity, must be drawn up. It goes without saying that original ideas are very important, but it is just as important to recognize exactly what consumers want, or more accurately what they need. They don't necessarily want something that is unique to the point of alienation, or something that is so far ahead of the competition that it's confusing. It is also important to address the issue of timing, just because you have a ground-breaking product it does not mean the market is ready for it.

When it comes to launch time one of the most important factors is excitement around the product. This can be done at various levels: digital campaigns; traditional advertising; in store promotion; word of mouth. The latter has proven to be very useful, shown to be twice as effective as traditional advertising. Get the word out, it's the only way to move your product.

Innovation is a fascinating industry and is among a small number of universal factors that account for the success of any venture. Therefore, familiarizing oneself with the subject matter is not merely an option but rather a necessity.

Shrinkage management and stock theft

Since the onset of the global recession shrinkage has been on the rise. That’s not to say that it’s a new problem but that it’s a persistent one which has yet to be put a satisfactory end. However, as most companies are still struggling with recovery, it is difficult for them to assign a significant part of their annual budget to security and loss prevention. What is also worrying are the results of a recent survey, conducted by the Centre of Retail Research (CRR), which showed that the major reasons for the increase in retail shrinkage was shoplifting followed closely by employee theft.

So when money is short and good people are hard to come by what remains? The machines. Recent research conducted by online giant IBM showed that mobile devices have become critical retail platforms and that emerging technology, including smart applications accessed via television, could be closer than expected. And, on the ground things are also changing.

By incorporating new technologies with their existing systems, retailers could effectively kill two birds with one stone. The introduction of automated systems would dissolve the need for extra staff and at the same provide a secure alternative for storage and dispensing.

Take Vinallti, a local retail solution provider, who have just launched their new iBlue Vault. Their automated stock replenishment system, described as “sophisticated and sexy”, automates a large retail category and provides one touch dispensing whilst also eliminating pilferage and stock handling. Although the system is currently exclusive to the tobacco industry, Vinallti hope to expand into other similar category products.

In a time where cutting down on expenses, and eliminating shrinkage is central to every company’s business strategy, the solution may lie in embracing the digital and automated sectors.
